Project: Bowl-Slope Residence – Botmaskop Fynbos Estate

Location Context:
This property is located on a dramatically sloped stand within the Botmaskop Fynbos Estate, offering sweeping views over the north-facing Simonsberg mountain range and adjacent open public green space. The steep terrain descends in a curved alignment relative to the site boundaries, naturally forming a bowl-like topography. The site is exposed to strong seasonal winds and benefits from substantial sunlight for most of the year.

Design Approach:
In line with the estate’s stringent architectural guidelines, the design emphasises a harmonious relationship with the landscape, using natural and authentic materials, planted roofs, and terraced forms. The concept also responds to key contextual elements such as solar orientation, prevailing winds, view lines, privacy, and access.

Design Methodology:
The dwelling is accessed from the upper portion of the site, placing the living spaces and master suite at the entry level to maximise convenience and views. This elevated positioning ensures that no view lines are obstructed. Generous sliding pocket doors open to the north, providing ample natural light and cross ventilation, while strategically placed skylights bring sunlight into deeper interior zones with limited exposure.
