Project: Coastal Family Retreat – Buffelsbaai

Location Context:
Situated just 25 km from Knysna, Buffelsbaai is a tranquil beach town defined by narrow roads, barefoot beachgoers, and an ever-present connection to the sea. The project centres around an existing face brick structure, positioned on a raised platform overlooking the main beach. The site enjoys both morning and afternoon sun but is also fully exposed to prevailing ocean winds.

Design Approach:
The original footprint of the building was retained, with only minor spatial changes and selective cosmetic upgrades. The primary design goal was to create a central open-plan living area for family gatherings and entertaining friends, with bedrooms arranged on either side. The layout opens to both the beachfront and a private rear courtyard—providing protected outdoor space for wind-sheltered evenings. Emphasis was placed on enhancing the interior, where most of the budget was allocated, while allowing the exterior to remain visually robust and weather-resistant.

Design Methodology:
Bedroom arrangements were carefully considered to suit the daily needs of different family members—providing comfort for the elderly, children, and guests alike—while maintaining proximity to the shared living area. The design preserves the character of a modest, relaxed beach holiday home, allowing the client to personalise the space over time in their own way.
