Project: Contour-Hugging Residence – Botmaskop Fynbos Estate

Location Context:
Botmaskop Fynbos Estate is a newly established residential development set on steep, north-facing slopes with expansive views across the Stellenbosch, Botmaskop, and Simonsberg mountain ranges. The site is highly exposed to wind and receives generous sunlight throughout the year, depending on the season. Due to the sharp gradient and rapid drop of the terrain, this site poses challenges for vertical circulation, practical functionality, thermal comfort, and construction logistics. The contours run parallel to the boundary lines, intensifying the topographical complexity.

Design Approach:
The estate enforces strict architectural guidelines aimed at integrating buildings into the landscape through the use of natural materials, planted roofs, and terraced forms. Our design also responds to key natural factors—sun orientation, wind exposure, view preservation, privacy, and access.

Design Methodology:
The architecture follows the site’s contours, expressed as soft, curved forms that emerge from the slope. This strategy enables internal spaces to unfold organically across different levels. A rear courtyard allows for cross ventilation and controlled sunlight exposure, offering climatic adaptability and a strong connection to the landscape.
