Project: Contemporary Entertaining Wing – Stellenbosch Wine Estate

Location Context:
The project involved extending an existing French-style dwelling, located on a flat site overlooking expansive vineyards with distant views of the Stellenbosch and Somerset West mountain ranges. The eastern side of the building, identified for the addition, experiences afternoon shade due to the presence of a large adjacent structure.

Design Approach:
The intent was to create a complementary, not competing, extension—something that would functionally and visually support the original home without imitating or overshadowing its bold character. A dark, rough-textured block was introduced, grounded and unobtrusive, with generous openings to ensure thermal comfort regardless of wind or sun exposure. The focus was deliberately inward-facing, prioritising atmosphere and functionality over exterior form.

Design Methodology:
A narrow glazed link connects the existing kitchen to the new structure, forming a seamless transition between old and new. The new space houses a large braai hearth, pizza oven, 4-metre dining table, and a sun lounge—capable of hosting both intimate gatherings and larger groups. The design promotes casual, inclusive living while preserving the architectural integrity of the original home.
