Project: “Heelbo” Cliffside Beach House – Buffelsbaai

Location Context:
As its name suggests, “Heelbo” is perched high on the hillside in Buffelsbaai, a coastal town known for its exposed topography and ever-present sea winds. This particular site is uniquely positioned to receive more sunlight than surrounding properties—an advantage, especially during the colder months. It enjoys dramatic panoramic views over Buffelsbaai and the untamed “wild side” coastline.

Design Approach:
The site’s steep southern slope presented a key challenge: avoiding a cascading multilevel structure that would require excessive stairs and complicated circulation. To address this, the building was placed as high as possible on the plot to maintain horizontal view lines and preserve spatial simplicity. The goal was to establish two efficient levels, offering framed outlooks to both the north and south.

Design Methodology:
Entry occurs at the uppermost level, with an additional floor set just above ground level forming a raised open-plan living space. This area is fully exposed to sunlight and coastal views in all directions. Special care was taken to shield sightlines from neighbouring homes and maintain a sense of seclusion. The material palette is intentionally robust, with nods to the rustic charm of Knysna’s historic log cabins—reflecting the area’s natural heritage while ensuring durability in a harsh coastal climate.
