Project: Split-Wing Family Home – King’s View Estate
Location Context:
King’s View Estate is a compact, well-established residential development near Stellenbosch, comprising small, mostly flat, north-facing stands. While view opportunities vary by plot, this particular site—positioned on the estate’s northern boundary—enjoys dramatic panoramic views of the Stellenbosch mountain range. The location is exposed to seasonal winds and benefits from substantial sunlight throughout the year.
Design Approach:
Guided by the estate’s strict architectural guidelines, which promote a Contemporary Cape Dutch Vernacular style, the design also responds thoughtfully to contextual elements such as sun orientation, wind direction, privacy, view lines, and access. These factors are particularly important given the estate’s limited plot sizes.
Design Methodology:
The layout features a double garage placed along the boundary line and a central pedestrian entrance that divides the structure into two distinct wings. This arrangement creates a central area—either open or enclosed—depending on coverage constraints and client preferences. Cross ventilation and solar access are optimised through large sliding pocket doors on the north and south façades, allowing for flexible interior conditions. The ground floor hosts the main living areas, while semi-private spaces—including bedrooms, a study, and a pyjama lounge—are situated on the first floor. The result is a secure, low-maintenance home ideal for a “lock-and-go” lifestyle, offering comfort and convenience close to everyday amenities.
