Project: Val de Vie Gentleman’s Estate – Pondside Courtyard Home
Location Context:
This expansive stand enjoys a serene outlook over a man-made retention pond, with the Simonsberg Mountain range reflected in the calm waters during the late afternoon. While scenic views are limited to the north due to surrounding estate buildings, this constraint unlocks an architectural opportunity to incorporate internal courtyards—drawing in natural light and allowing for cross-ventilation throughout the dwelling.
Design Approach:
Though subject to the strict architectural guidelines of Val de Vie Gentleman’s Estate, our approach also responds sensitively to the site’s natural context. Key considerations include sun paths, prevailing wind directions, view lines, privacy, site access, and proximity to the dam.
Design Methodology:
The single-storey home unfolds across the slender permitted building zone, positioned confidently between the estate road and the pond’s edge. The floorplan is designed to accommodate between two and ten people at any given time—balancing solitude and connection. The building form is a direct response to the site geometry, optimised for both solar access and framed views.
