Project: Dune Crest Residence – Plettenberg Bay
Location Context:
This pristine site is perched atop a coastal dune, overlooking the vast open ocean of Plettenberg Bay with uninterrupted 360-degree exposure to sun, wind, and panoramic views stretching from the Keurbooms River to the horizon. The site’s elevated and isolated character offers a rare opportunity to engage with the full force of its natural surroundings.
Design Approach:
The architectural response is deeply grounded in the natural context, carefully considering sun paths, wind directions, sightlines, privacy, access, and stringent environmental regulations. The design aims to respect the landscape while maximising the immersive experience of coastal living.
Design Methodology:
The building’s base is fully embedded into the dune, providing a sense of shelter and permanence. The upper storey drapes gently over the dune, its form and colour palette harmonising with the tones of sea, sky, and sand. The plan layout is informed by the site’s natural contours, drawing inspiration from Greek beachside architecture and Indian tropical design—particularly in the selection of materials and sensitivity to elemental exposure.
