Project: Vineyard Edge Farmstead – Heritage-Inspired Rural Retreat

Location Context:
Set on an open stand nestled between vineyards, this rural site boasts panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges and is positioned near a flowing river. The setting presents abundant architectural opportunities—balanced against contextual sensitivities and urban planning restrictions, which together define the unique character of the site.

Design Approach:
The design responds to two key contexts: the natural environment and the existing built fabric. The site falls under a heritage protection overlay, which necessitates sensitivity to surrounding vernacular styles. At the same time, natural factors such as solar orientation, strong wind exposure, view lines, privacy, and access routes guide the design direction.

Design Methodology:
The structure is carefully embedded into an embankment, raising the finished floor level just above the vineyard canopy. This creates a light, floating effect while allowing the home to visually blend into the landscape. The design is inspired by the site’s natural contours and incorporates subtle references to traditional Cape Dutch architecture found nearby.
