Project: Barn-Form Holiday Dwelling – King’s View Estate

Location Context:
King’s View Estate is a well-established yet compact residential development comprising small, predominantly flat, north-facing plots. This particular site, located along the estate’s northern boundary, enjoys expansive and uninterrupted views across the Stellenbosch mountain range. The site is exposed to seasonal wind and benefits from full sun throughout most of the year, depending on seasonal variation.

Design Approach:
The estate enforces strict architectural guidelines rooted in a Contemporary Cape Dutch Vernacular style. In response, the design considers both contextual parameters and environmental factors—such as solar orientation, prevailing winds, privacy, access, and framed view lines—especially relevant due to the smaller erf sizes within the estate.

Design Methodology:
The dwelling is shaped around a primary thatched barn form, with a series of smaller volumes subtly juxtaposed to create intimate, largely outdoor spaces. A mezzanine level accommodates bedrooms, accessed externally, reinforcing the sense of independence and retreat. North- and south-facing sliding doors support cross ventilation and solar gain, allowing interior spaces to flexibly adapt to changing weather conditions. The result is a secure, self-contained retreat—ideal for a relaxed, off-grid vacation lifestyle, far removed from the everyday.
