Project: Streamside Courtyard Home – King’s View Estate
Location Context:
Located centrally within King’s View Estate near Stellenbosch, this site is positioned adjacent to a green belt and a stream that flows into a nearby retention pond. The estate is composed of compact, flat, north-facing plots with varying view opportunities. The site receives generous sunlight throughout the year and experiences mild seasonal winds.
Design Approach:
While the estate enforces strict architectural guidelines favouring a Contemporary Cape Dutch Vernacular style, our design is equally influenced by the site’s natural conditions—sun paths, prevailing wind directions, sightlines, privacy considerations, and access—especially important given the limited plot sizes.
Design Methodology:
The home is laid out with a double garage located on the boundary, and a central pedestrian access point that divides the dwelling into two distinct wings. This configuration allows for a central courtyard or linking space—either open or enclosed depending on coverage constraints and the client’s preferences.
Large sliding pocket doors on both the northern and southern façades ensure optimal cross ventilation and daylight access, adapting easily to changing weather conditions. The main living areas occupy the ground floor, while more private functions—bedrooms, a study, and a pyjama lounge—are situated on the first floor.
The resulting layout supports a secure, low-maintenance “lock-and-go” lifestyle—ideal for residents seeking comfort, privacy, and proximity to everyday amenities within a scenic and tranquil estate setting.
