Project: Val de Vie Gentleman’s Estate – Waterside Residence

Location Context:
This expansive stand overlooks a man-made retention pond, with the Simonsberg Mountain range casting its reflection across the water during late afternoon sunsets. Although views are limited to the north due to the surrounding estate development, this constraint presents the opportunity to introduce internal courtyards—inviting natural light and cross-ventilation deep into the dwelling.

Design Approach:
Val de Vie Gentleman’s Estate enforces strict architectural guidelines. Nonetheless, our design process places equal emphasis on responding to the natural context, including solar orientation, prevailing wind directions, view lines, privacy, accessibility, and the property’s close relationship with the dam.

Design Methodology:
The single-storey residence extends across the slender buildable area, firmly nestled between the water’s edge and the estate road. The floorplan is crafted to accommodate between two and ten occupants simultaneously, offering privacy when required, while also fostering moments of intimacy. The layout is directly informed by the site’s shape, as well as exposure to sun and northern views.
